Meliva Spine Center Kaiserslautern is a private practice for orthopedics specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders. The practice was integrated into the Meliva MVZ Westpfalz in July 2025 and emerged from the former Back and Spine Center (RWZ) Dr. Käfer. In addition to the location in MEDIC Park Kaiserslautern, there is also a practice in Glan-Münchweiler that treats both publicly and privately insured patients.
The medical team, led by PD Dr. med. Wolfram Käfer and Michael Gonzalez, represents competence, experience, and individual care for all forms of back pain….
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Anesthesia Kaiserslautern works on an interdisciplinary basis with various surgical disciplines. Our team supports procedures in different fields and ensures safety, comfort, and optimal conditions during and after the operation with individually tailored anesthesia methods.
Patient Information
Before the Procedure
Before the planned operation, you will discuss all relevant details with your surgeon. In consultation with us, they will provide you with the surgery date.
If possible, please come to our center for the pre-anesthetic consultation a few days before the procedure. The preliminary examinations required for the anesthesia will be carried out by your family doctor or pediatrician. Please bring all relevant documents, including a list of any long-term medications you may be taking, to the consultation. Your anesthesiologist will suggest the most suitable anesthesia method for you.
We would like to point out that after an outpatient procedure under anesthesia, you are not permitted to actively participate in road traffic for 24 hours. Furthermore, you must arrange in advance for a suitable pickup (by car) and for appropriate overnight care by an adult.
If you are unable to keep the scheduled surgery appointment due to an acute illness or other circumstances, we ask that you inform both the surgeon and us as soon as possible.
The Operation
Please arrive on time for your scheduled operation. This is the only way to ensure a smooth process.
Please note that you are not allowed to eat (for 6 hours), drink (for 2 hours), or smoke before the operation.
The continuation of any existing long-term medication must be discussed with the anesthesiologist.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing. Please bring any existing aids (crutches, cold packs, etc.) with you.
Recovery Room
After the operation, you will continue to be cared for by our experienced nursing staff in the recovery room for approximately 2 hours.
This ensures a high level of safety and guarantees that only patients who are truly “fit” are discharged!
After the recovery room phase, inpatients of the Lutrina Clinic will be transferred to the care of the nursing staff on the ward.
Discharge Home
Before discharge, you and your companion will be familiarized again with the necessary rules of conduct by the nursing staff and, if applicable, by the surgeon.
The follow-up treatment is usually carried out by the surgeons in their practice rooms; please clarify the availability of the colleagues with them yourself!

Our History
The “Center for Outpatient Surgery” was founded back in 1979 and has been continuously developed and expanded ever since. With this bold step, they were far ahead of their time, as outpatient surgery was still unknown in this country at the end of the 1970s. Our center is therefore the oldest outpatient surgical facility of its kind in Germany and thus a pioneer of this patient-friendly care!
Together with a very experienced and stable nursing team, 5 specialists in anesthesiology care for a multitude of young and old patients each year during surgical procedures across all disciplines.
After more than 40 years at the Pfaffplatz location, we are now part of the Meliva MVZ Westpfalz family and have a new location in PRE-Park Kaiserslautern.
